Show Notes:

Have you ever stopped to think about what it is that drives you, what motivates you? Have you ever noticed that you're motivated differently based upon the situation and circumstances? In one setting, you may be motivated to by a sense of accomplishment, while in another setting, you may be motivated by the reward, or outcome that you'll receive once you've completed a certain task.

Motivation is categorized into two main types, intrinsic and extrinsic, with both having multiple sub-categories.

Intrinsic Motivators- Driven by internal rewards

  • Competence motivation- driven by self-improvement through learning
  • Attitude motivation- driven by how you see the world around you
  • Achievement-based motivation- driven by the sense of accomplishment when you complete your goal
  • Independence motivation- driven by a sense of being unique, different from others

Extrinsic Motivators- Driven by external rewards

  • Reward-based motivation- driven by a sense of compensation; financial, material or other
  • Fear-based motivation- driven by the avoidance of pain
  • Power-based motivation- drives those who seek more control
  • Equity/Justice-based motivation- driven by fairness, not just to you, but also to those around you
  • Affiliation motivation- driven by who you are in your social circles, compliments you receive, acknowledgement from others

Each of these motivational types can be positive or negative, depending upon the circumstances and if they are used to the extreme. Some have a tipping point to where the effectiveness diminishes as the individual loses a balanced perspective when approaching the situation.

Examine what is driving you to ensure that you are pursuing the best course for your life. Don't allow for misplaced motivation to drive you to something that is not the best for you as you may be actually seeing the reward of the motivation, not the outcome of the event or situation itself.
